I have picked out 100 cities for the first phase of Carornocar.com. These are all cities that I have been to, although I have spent a great deal more time in some than others!
The list is a mix of destinations from top tourist hotspots like Malaga and Alicante through to places like St Kitts and St Martin, which are a bit more niche destinations.
As the site develops, I will do some different tables showing summary listings for the following criteria:
- Quality of public transport (positive qualities).
- Breakdown by modes – especially metro and suburban rail + scenic routes.
- Cycling rating.
- Quality of roads for driving.
- Driving dangers and annoyances – costs, accident risks, speed cameras and so on.
- City general interest score – is it worth visiting in the first place?

Mono = monorail, cable car, funicular or other scenic ride within or near city
Walk = is the city “walkable”?

Boat = boat trips available (on sea, lakes, rivers or canals)
Total = total non-car weighted score

Hire a car in Venice! Don’t you mean a boat! You guys have got to be joking, how can you have any credibility when you don’t even know the basic geography of the world’s most famous car-free city!

Wait until you read our suggestions. There is much more to the Venice region than canals!
I don’t understand why you include a tiny village like Billund, but no mention of major destinations like Faro in the Algarve, nowhere in Mexico, and you’ve totally forgotten about Greece too!
I will be interested to see why you consider a rental car in Boston to be needed. Haven’t you ridden the T, the first subway in the USA, but still much cleaner than anything you have in London!
Please don’t jump the gun
Reasons for hiring a car in Boston are based on driving out to places like Cape Cod / Nantucket / Martha’s Vineyard, and all the fantastic fall foliage. I have ridden the T many times, spent 3 months in Quincy – yes, it is an excellent system, but not without its pitfalls as our article will explore.
Bilbao? No but yeah, but no but yeah. Make your mind up!
Interesting list, but you have some really obscure places in with big resorts like Alicante and Malaga.
What about places like Lanzarote or Ibiza?
