🚗Do we need a car in Puebla? Is it worth it? Should we rent one? | Comment
Puebla is one of Mexico’s most elegant historic cities, set beneath the shadow of the Popocatépetl volcano and known for its colonial architecture, tiled buildings, cuisine, and walkable centre 🏛️. It’s large, but its heart is compact and well organised. That leads many visitors to a familiar question: should you rent a car in Puebla? As with several Mexican cities, the answer depends on whether you stay central or venture outward.

🚗 Advantages of Renting a Car

  • Easy access beyond the city 🗺️
Day trips to Cholula, Atlixco, rural villages, or mountain viewpoints are far simpler with a car.

  • Flexibility for regional travel 🌄
Puebla sits at a crossroads between Mexico City, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, making onward travel convenient by road.

  • Comfort for longer distances ❄️
Air-conditioning and door-to-door travel matter if you’re moving between spread-out districts.

  • Straightforward driving outside the core 🚦
Major roads and ring roads are modern and easy to navigate.

🚧 Disadvantages of Renting a Car

  • Historic centre is walkable 🚶
Most major sights, museums, churches, and restaurants are within easy walking distance.

  • Traffic and parking ⚠️
Central Puebla can be busy, and parking near historic streets is limited.

  • Good public transport 🚌
Buses and taxis cover most urban trips efficiently and cheaply.

  • Unnecessary for short stays 🚕
If you’re visiting mainly for culture and food, a car may sit unused.

Getting to Puebla 🚍✈️

Puebla has a very limited range of international flights, and unless you happen to live near Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport, flying directly is rarely practical. There are no meaningful direct flights from the USA or Canada, and even internationally connected travellers will find options sparse. As a result, Puebla is not really an international gateway in its own right.

For almost everyone, the best approach is to transfer overland from Mexico City. The original Mexico City airport, Benito Juárez International Airport (IATA MEX), is actually well positioned for Puebla-bound travel, sitting on the eastern side of the city, which avoids much of the worst cross-city traffic. From there, frequent long-distance buses run at least hourly, take around two hours, and offer a journey time very similar to driving a rental car.

In practice, the bus is often the simplest and least stressful option: no parking, no toll handling, and no navigating Mexico City traffic. Driving only becomes more attractive if you already have a car and your final destination lies outside Puebla’s centre. For most visitors, however, Mexico City → Puebla by bus is the default, efficient, and sensible choice.

Flying into Puebla Airport ✈️🌋

Even though Hermanos Serdán International Airport has a very limited range of international flights, there is one upside if you do end up routing via Houston and flying directly into Puebla. On a clear day, the approach can offer spectacular views of Popocatépetl and the surrounding volcanic landscape — something you simply won’t see when transferring by road from Mexico City.

In this part of central Mexico, prevailing winds are generally from the east or north-east, which means aircraft approaching Puebla typically line up from the north or north-east rather than from the south. Because Popocatépetl lies to the south-west of Puebla, the best views are usually from the left-hand side of the aircraft. It’s never guaranteed — weather, routing, and air-traffic control always have the final say — but if you do have a choice of seat, left side gives you the best odds of seeing the volcano rising above the plateau.

Travelling between Mexico City and Puebla 🌋

The journey between Mexico City and Puebla skirts the edge of Popocatépetl–Iztaccíhuatl National Park, one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in central Mexico. While the motorway itself offers only fleeting glimpses of the volcanoes, the best views are not from the road at all. To really experience the scale, forests, and volcanic scenery, you need to get out and hike.

Many of the most rewarding trails are accessed from the village of San Nicolás de los Ranchos, which sits on the slopes below Popocatépetl. From here, hiking routes lead into pine forests and open highland terrain with expansive views back toward Puebla and across the plateau. These walks turn what is otherwise a straightforward intercity transfer into an opportunity to experience the landscape that physically and visually separates the two cities — something the bus or car journey alone can’t fully convey.

Conclusion — should you rent a car in Puebla

If your stay is focused on Puebla’s historic centre, renting a car is usually more hassle than help, and walking plus taxis work best 🚶🚕.
If you plan to explore surrounding towns, landscapes, or use Puebla as a regional base, renting a car becomes very worthwhile 🚗.

In short: Puebla shines without a car in the centre, but rewards having one once you step beyond its beautifully preserved core 🏛️🌋.
