🚗Do we need a car in Suriname? Is it worth it? Should we rent one? | Comment
Suriname is one of the most fascinating countries in South America, blending Dutch influence with Caribbean culture and Amazonian wilderness. Because most visitors stay in Paramaribo and then join organised river or jungle trips, the decision to rent a car depends almost entirely on how far you want to travel on your own. For many people, a car isn’t strictly necessary, yet it can still be useful for a few day trips. So, should you rent a car in Suriname?

🚗 Driving around Paramaribo

Paramaribo is compact, lively, and fairly walkable. Taxis are inexpensive, and local buses cover the main suburban routes, so you can move around without difficulty. Parking inside the city centre is limited, and traffic often slows to a crawl at peak times. As a result, a rental car doesn’t add much convenience here.

🌴 Day trips along the coast

Once you leave Paramaribo, public transport becomes slower and much less frequent. If you want to visit places such as:

  • Commewijne (with its plantations and riverside villages)

  • Brownsberg Nature Park

  • Brokopondo Reservoir

  • Nieuw Amsterdam

…then a rental car starts to make sense. These areas are scattered along the coast or inland road network, and although minibuses exist, they leave when full and don’t follow reliable timetables. A car gives you flexibility, especially if you want to stop for photos, viewpoints, or roadside food stalls.

🛶 Exploring the interior

Travelling to the rainforest, river lodges, or remote Maroon and Indigenous communities requires a boat, a 4×4, or a small plane. Tour companies specialise in these routes because they rely on local knowledge and permissions. You cannot reach places like:

  • Danpaati

  • Anaula

  • Palumeu

  • Awarradam

  • Raleighvallen

…with a standard rental car. These trips use long wooden boats on the Upper Suriname River or short domestic flights from Zorg en Hoop Airport. Because the interior is the highlight for most travellers, a car plays no role in this part of your trip.

🚍 Public transport and taxis

Suriname’s minibus system is informal but cheap. It works well within Paramaribo and for short hops to nearby districts. However, services often stop early and offer little reliability for day trips. Taxis fill the gaps and remain good value, which helps reduce the need for a car.

⭐ Verdict — Should you rent a car in Suriname?

A gentle yes… but only for day trips outside Paramaribo.

If your visit focuses on Paramaribo plus organised jungle excursions, then you won’t need a car at all. However, if you want the freedom to explore the coastal districts, rivers, and nature parks at your own pace, then renting a car for one or two days works very well.
