🚗Do we need a car in Chipata? Is it worth it? Should we rent one? | Comment
Chipata sits in Zambia’s far east, close to the Malawi border. Many travellers ask early on: should you rent a car in Chipata? The town is friendly and easy to navigate. However, most visitors come here because they want to reach South Luangwa National Park, and that shapes nearly every transport decision.

🚶‍♂️ Getting around Chipata without a car

Chipata is compact, and the centre is simple to explore. You can walk to shops, banks, and markets. Taxis are cheap and easy to find. Buses run to Lusaka and to Lilongwe in Malawi, so onward travel is not a problem. If you are only staying in town for a night or two, you do not need a rental car.

🐘 South Luangwa: The reason most tourists pass through

South Luangwa lies about 120 km west of Chipata. The road is decent, but it takes time, and you need to stay alert. Most travellers stay in lodges around Mfuwe, just outside the park. These lodges usually collect guests directly from Chipata or from Mfuwe Airport.

Once you reach a lodge, you will not drive inside the park yourself. Guided safari vehicles handle all game drives. Because of this, a rental car adds cost without adding real value for classic wildlife trips.

🚗 When renting a car might help

A car can make sense if you plan a longer road trip through eastern Zambia. It also helps if you want to explore rural villages around Chipata or continue north toward Lundazi. Even so, hiring a car in Chipata is not always easy. Fleets are small, and many travellers choose to rent in Lusaka, where 4×4 options are more common.

If you plan to cross into Malawi, you should avoid using a rental car. Cross-border rules are strict, and most agencies do not allow it.

✈️ A note on flying

Most safari travellers now fly into Mfuwe Airport. It sits close to the lodges, so transfers are quick. If you follow this route, you will not need a car in Chipata at all.

🧭 Conclusion – Should you rent a car in Chipata?

  • 🚫 No for most safari holidays. Lodge transfers and guided vehicles make a car unnecessary.

  • ❔ Maybe if you want to explore eastern Zambia on your own and you are confident driving in rural conditions.
