🚗Do we need a car in Hiroshima? Is it worth it? Should we rent one? | Comment
If you’re planning a visit and wondering should you rent a car in Hiroshima, the answer is that Hiroshima is one of Japan’s best cities to visit without a car. Compact, well planned, and exceptionally strong on public transport, Hiroshima combines emotional historical sites with easy urban mobility 🚋🏙️.

For most visitors, a car would add cost and complexity without adding much value.

🚶 Hiroshima without a car

Hiroshima works extremely well without renting a car.

Works best if you:

  • Stay near the city centre or around Hiroshima Station.

  • Focus on:

    • Peace Memorial Park and Museum.

    • The Atomic Bomb Dome.

    • Central shopping and dining areas.

  • Walk or use taxis and public transport 🚶‍♂️🚕

Why it works:

  • The city centre is flat and walkable.

  • Hiroshima has an excellent tram (streetcar) network, one of the best in Japan 🚋.

  • Trams directly connect Hiroshima Station with the Peace Park.

  • Buses fill in gaps where needed.

  • The city is intuitive and easy to navigate for visitors.

👉 For urban sightseeing, Hiroshima is close to ideal without a car.

Getting to Hiroshima from elsewhere in Japan 🚄✈️

Hiroshima is extremely well connected to the rest of Japan by high-speed rail, and for most travellers the train is the fastest and most convenient option. From Osaka, the Sanyō Shinkansen takes just 1 hour 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima, with frequent departures throughout the day. From Tokyo, the journey takes approximately 4 hours by Shinkansen, typically involving a change at Shin-Osaka if you are not on a through service. Trains are fast, reliable, and arrive directly in central Hiroshima, making rail the default choice for most visitors 🚆.

Domestic flights are also available, particularly from Tokyo, but they are often less efficient overall. While flight time from Tokyo to Hiroshima is around 1 hour 30 minutes, this does not include travel to the airport, security, boarding, or the onward transfer from Hiroshima Airport, which is located some distance outside the city. As a result, the total door-to-door journey time is often longer than by train. For travel from western Japan, the Shinkansen is almost always the simplest, fastest, and most comfortable way to reach Hiroshima 🚄✨.

Getting from Hiroshima to Nagasaki 🚄

Travelling from Hiroshima to Nagasaki by train is straightforward but requires one change. You first take the Sanyō Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Hakata, which takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. From Hakata, you transfer to a JR Kyushu limited-express service (Kamome or Relay Kamome) to Nagasaki, taking a further 1 hour 40–45 minutes. Allowing for the transfer, the total journey time is typically around 3 to 3½ hours, making rail travel the fastest and most practical option between the two cities without the need for a car 🚆.

🚗 When renting a car makes sense

A car becomes useful only if you plan to explore outside the city and rail corridors.

Good reasons to rent a car in Hiroshima include:

  • Visiting rural inland areas of Chūgoku.

  • Exploring coastal regions away from main train lines 🌊.

  • Travelling to small towns with limited bus services.

  • Creating a road trip across western Honshu.

Regional reality:

  • Major destinations are rail-connected.

  • Rural areas thin out quickly in public transport coverage.

  • Driving adds flexibility beyond the city.

👉 A car helps for regional travel, not for Hiroshima itself.

Conclusion – should you rent a car in Hiroshima?

You do not need to rent a car in Hiroshima if your visit focuses on the city, its historical sites, and nearby rail-connected destinations.

However, renting a car in Hiroshima can make sense if you plan to explore rural Chūgoku or coastal areas beyond the reach of trains and trams. For most visitors, the best approach is to enjoy Hiroshima car-free and only consider a car when heading further afield 🚗🌏.
