I don’t see why anyone would even consider renting a car in Zurich. How did you work out that people would?
I can see why Zurich – and Switzerland more generally – prompts that reaction, because I’ve been there many times myself and I’ve never once personally considered renting a car. I go to Switzerland very deliberately for the trains. The rail journeys are part of the experience rather than just a means of getting from A to B, and the network is so dense, reliable and well-integrated that you can reach an extraordinary number of places without ever touching a steering wheel.
It’s also absolutely fair to say that, in practical terms, you don’t need a car in Switzerland in the way you might in other countries. Towns, villages, ski resorts and even quite remote areas are typically connected by trains, buses, cable cars or post buses, all working together seamlessly. From that point of view, the country almost feels designed to reward people who travel without a car.
However, “not necessary” isn’t quite the same thing as “never sensible.” When you start looking at cost rather than principle, the picture can change a bit. If three or four people are travelling together, especially over several days, car hire can sometimes work out cheaper than buying multiple rail tickets or passes, even in a country with such an excellent public transport system.
There’s also the question of travel style. Trains are fantastic for seeing Switzerland from the window, but some people prefer the flexibility of stopping frequently, taking detours, or exploring places that aren’t right on a rail line. A car makes it easier to linger, to pull over, or to visit several small locations in a single day without working to a timetable.
None of this takes anything away from the trains themselves, which are rightly famous and, for many visitors, the main reason to come in the first place. It’s simply a recognition that different people value different kinds of freedom when they travel, even in a country where public transport sets such a high benchmark.
And ultimately, the most straightforward point is that car rental facilities exist at Zurich Airport – just as they do at every other major airport in Switzerland – because there is a real and consistent demand for them. If nobody ever needed or wanted a car, those services wouldn’t be there. Switzerland just happens to be good enough at transport that travellers genuinely get to choose.
